Description
Russia Seen Seeking Active Role in Mideast Peacemaking Efforts For nearly two decades, the United States has had a monopoly over peacemaking efforts in the Middle East, trying to settle the decades-long Arab-Israeli conflict. Washington, backed by Israel, has consistently rejected any role by Russia or the European Union in the Middle East peace process. The U.S. Mideast peace process, driven through extensive shuttle diplomacy, has been followed by rival Republican and Democrat administrations in past years. It has now been taken up by the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama. Obama began his mandate in January 2009 with a reconciliatory speech in Egypt towards the Arab and Muslim worlds, offering to reach out to countries like Iran and Syria, Israel's arch foes, in an attempt to promote a peace settlement between Israel and Arab states.
